Audra has suffered from migraines for over 6 years. The migraines have been so intense that they have led to seizures. When these attacks happen, she has been known to loose hearing, sight, speech, memory loss and even paralysis from the chest down.
While each seizure is different and the symptoms vary, lasting from minutes to several days, her attacks cause her to become bedridden for days or even weeks. Currently Audra has regained everything except for speech, the ability to eat/drink on a regular basis and continues to have some memory loss.
For years, Audra has spent her time in and out of doctors offices, hospitals and specialists throughout various states only to be told that they didn’t know what was wrong with her, it’s all in her head, or to say they could not help her.
Last month, she was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). FND is a condition in which patients experience neurological symptoms such as weakness, movement disorders, sensory symptoms and blackouts. The brain of the patient is structurally normal but functions incorrectly. According to National Organization for Rare Disorders, FND is thought to occur in 14-22 cases per 100,000 people.
The doctors that diagnosed her with FND wanted to treat solely with medication by using an experimental drug, that had even more side effects. While this was not an option, we decided to treat this on a more natural approach-healing from the inside out. She is combining low-impact exercise, balance therapy, psychotherapy, speech therapy/sensory integration, clean eating and increasing healthy fats and supplements as part of her routine. Eating however continues to be a struggle with smells/textures and keeping down foods.
Thanks to the Internet, doctors that specialize in FND were found in Australia and Europe. Now working with them remotely, we hope that they can help guide us in this long recovery process. As part of their treatment they specialize with neurostimulation. Here, we will start treatments (advised by them) using Neurofeedback therapy.
Below is Audra’s first brain map. First done with eyes closed and then again eyes opened. We will continue to treat Audra with regular Neurofeedback sessions and monitor her progress.
Please keep Audra in your prayers and continue to follow along here at Serenity Therapeutics, llc., as we help treat her on her journey to recovery.
