Skylar’s Story – Autism & Speech Apraxia

Skylar is a twin, born 5 weeks premature. He had umbilical cord wrapped around his neck which deprived him of oxygen during the twin birth. Skylar’s skull bones were overlapped in the frontal lobe area of his skull. His diagnosis is autism spectrum, specifically speech apraxia.

His current sounds or words are about what he has had since age 4. Some words he has gained with intense practice. Skylar is high functioning on many levels. Even though he cannot speak, Skylar has learned at least 8 foreign languages, as he loves to learn new thing and language is a passion of his.

Skylar has what is called text neck. This is seizure behaviors due to adolescent scoliosis, where his atlas area is trying to calcify due to always looking down. Skylar attends regular chiropractic sessions and hippotherapy (Hippotherapy is an intervention used by a physical therapist, recreational therapist, occupational therapist, or speech and language pathologist. The movement of the horse affects a rider’s posture, balance, coordination, strength and sensorimotor systems. It is thought that the warmth and shape of the horse and its rhythmic, three-dimensional movement along with the rider’s interactions with the horse and responses to the movement of the horse can improve the flexibility, posture, balance and mobility of the rider) along with balance and strengthening exercise to help counteract his seizures.

Skylar started Neurofeedback sessions in December 2019 and is currently on session 4. Skylar has four areas that he will work on. Currently he is working on C3/C4 areas.
Skylar’s mom recently stated that she notices that he has been more social, had less headaches and is more aware of his surroundings since he has started his sessions.
We look forward to seeing the progress that Skylar is making. Thank you for being apart of Skylar’s journey.
